Have you ever noticed how many times eyes or ears are healed in the New Testament? Of course, there are other healings—people restored to mobility and the dead are raised—but eyes and ears come up a lot. And it wasn’t until I paid attention to how often “eyes to see” and “ears to hear” are mentioned in the Old Testament (verses Jesus quotes often) that I grew curious.
Read Mark 10:46–52. Why does Jesus ask Bartimaeus, “What do you want me to do for you” (v.52)? It seems obvious that, if a person couldn’t see and had the chance to ask Jesus for anything, he would ask to see again. But as a blind person at that time, Bartimaeus lacked more than vision; he was likely without a home, hungry, and alone. Wouldn’t he have asked for a warm meal or fresh water? Perhaps a home or some clean clothes? I’m not sure it would occur to me to ask for my vision with so many tangible needs.
But Bartimaeus knew who was asking the question. So, I wonder, what would you ask Him to do if Jesus called for you today and asked you, “What do you want me to do for you?” What would your faith imagine He could do for you? What is the thing that only He can do for you?
