What pictures does your mind paint for you at the mention of the word powerful? Maybe flexed muscles, fast cars, or a favorite superhero … I wonder what comes to mind for kids. What has their world told them about what power means? What do you want them to know about Jesus’ power?
Read Mark 5:21–43. In this layered story, we have two images of His power overlapping in the same one: the power of His physical presence, and the power of belief. Did touching Jesus’ clothes heal the woman in the crowd? That’s not what Scripture says. He said to her, “Dear woman, your faith has healed you. Go in peace. You are free from your suffering” (v. 24). Her faith healed her! And her reward is peace and freedom.
All the while, Jairus is begging for his daughter’s life and, before Jesus even arrives at his house, He says “Don’t be afraid. Just believe.” (v. 36). I wonder what would happen to our faith if we prayed for belief that heals? What would shift in our walk with Jesus if we asked Him to relieve our fears first? How would your belief, faith, and discipleship be strengthened if you rested in the knowledge that Jesus is powerful? Not simply powerful—powerful enough to heal and bring freedom.
