The story of Jesus feeding over 5,000 people is staggering and delightful. But this story is often told in isolation from what comes right before this moment. And I wonder if the miracle is found in how Jesus showed up, rather than only in what He did. Just prior to this event, Jesus heard about the death of his cousin, John the Baptist. So, He withdrew from the crowd and went to be alone in a boat. But at that point in His ministry, Jesus’ presence did not go unnoticed and alone was a place He could rarely find. This was one of those moments. Can you imagine His possible sorrow over the death of His cousin? Or perhaps His desire to escape the threat of Herod?

When Jesus reached the other side, He showed compassion for the crowd. Read Matthew 14:13–21. Where do you see Him showing compassion and care? What do you notice about His choices after He lands?

The miracle of God’s presence and provision reveals itself in how Jesus showed compassion. What if compassion itself is miraculous? What if, as we are invited to be the hands and feet of Jesus, we get to be part of everyday miracles, just because He shows up?
