Leader Devo
Lately, I’ve been contemplating the whole idea of leadership. It’s the catchphrase pretty much everywhere, not just in Christian circles. Everyone wants to be a leader, or society thinks everyone should strive to be a leader. Lead people. Develop people. Be strategic. Take the initiative. Create systems. Be a visionary. Be in charge.
Even the Israelite people thought they needed a leader. Read 1 Samuel 8:4–7.
I’ve been wondering lately whether we are getting the whole leadership thing wrong. Maybe we’ve gotten it backward. Maybe instead of trying to be the dynamic leader with a vision who everyone thinks we should be, we should instead look at what it means to follow.
On his podcast Napkin Scribbles, Leonard Sweet tells about an encounter he had with a church official who asked him what his vision was. Sweet’s response was “I don’t have a vision.” The man asked what he meant because he was supposed to be a visionary leader. Sweet replied, “No, I don’t have a vision. Jesus is my vision. I’m just following Him where He leads me.” We don’t have to strive to be in charge or “step up” into our callings to lead at a higher level.
Friends, the world doesn’t need another leader. We already have a leader who knows time and space. We already have a leader who is all-knowing, all-powerful, and all-present. We already have a leader who knows us inside out and who knows what is best. We already have a leader who is in charge. Let’s be followers of the one and only God and leave the leading to Him. He’s definitely enough.
